I love going for walks in the snow, or on the beach. Not just because it is beautiful, but also because I love being able to stop after a while, and look back, and see where I was. Just by looking, I know what I was doing or thinking about as I took those steps. I love footprints, sometimes I even follow random sets just for fun, trying to imagine whose they are. Where were they going, what were they thinking. Like a shadow of the past, or a memory, you can see so much in such little things... long and short strides, full prints or partial, the size of the foot, the type of shoe... Just by looking you know who was out for a run, what caught someones interest, who was playing and who was in a hurry. There is so much fuel for the imagination in a set of footprints.
This is, of course, the time of year for memories, what with the beginning of a new year, 'Auld Lang Syne,' the traditional resolutions and such. As such, December 31st is the obligatory day for stopping and turning around to find out what kind of tracks we've left in our wake. Some of them have already been blown away, but there are enough left to tell a decent story.
Looking back at this year's path can be a bit confusing, it sprints and stalls, loops around itself and dashes around as if trying to catch a firefly, up and down hills and back and forth. All over the place really...
The logical place to start is with a look at last years
resolutions. Looking at them is rather amusing actually. Turns out I only kept one of them (#3 - but I did TWO of those instead of the one I set as a goal). Most of them I worked at, but didn't make it, and then some I simply failed at. Miserably (#7 - I achieved an impressive .25/3). In spite of the overwhelmingly low grade, I liked having the goals in place because it kept me thinking about the things I wanted to do, and kinda forced me to think about them more often instead of ignoring them. So I will be thinking of more tasks to set for myself in the next few days.
The year itself started out with a cousin's wedding, and ended with a bout of (swine?) flu. In between were countless hours at the gym, my Grandmother's funeral, two certification tests, endless hours of scanning old photos, a chilly track season, multiple trips (White Salmon, Costa Rica, Philadelphia, St. George), lots of hikes, a cell phone, a new car, the beginning of a final year of work in this location, an exhilarating and heartbreaking soccer season, a HS tradition called Mr. PHS, tending the parent's basset hound and making lots, and lots of candy for our families caroling tradition. It's been busy to say the least.
Other things 2009 has brought into my life:
In February I started listening to 'This American Life,' now one of my favorite podcasts, up there with 'This I Believe' and 'Science Friday.'
I have developed an actual interest in government and politics this year while interpreting the Govt. class at work (I ditched mine and took some Poly Sci classes at the CC that put me to sleep instead).
The last half of the year had me spending a huge amount of time focused on soccer, and one of the byproducts of this years season was a new love for Real Salt Lake, the nearby MLS Soccer team that wound up winning the MLS Cup this year :) This made me very happy, of course. I have decided that if I end up moving to Utah next year, I am going to buy season tickets.
I haven't done much in the way of cooking this year, but in spite of it I have found some new favorite foods - Havarti cheese is a new favorite either with a sandwich or with kalamata olives on crackers. Lavender flavored chocolate was a new find as well - a double challenge because good chocolate is certainly not something that is easy to find in Idaho. Oh, and Del Monte's fresh grapefruit cups are hugely addicting!
This year introduced some new movies that made me happy: Star Trek, Up, Bella, Where the Wild Things Are, Harry Potter 6, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (new to me). Needless to say, there are several I haven't had the chance to see yet that would otherwise make the list.
I spent WAY too much money on iTunes this year, but that is because I have some new favorite musicians, the best of them being: Regina Spektor, Lenka, Sia, Meaghan Smith, Ingrid Michelson, Mika, Kate Nash, Michael Franti, Kate Earl, Eisley, and Missy Higgins. Audio books are another weakness... I won't even go there.
And of course, I have managed to find some new books worthy of being included on my main bookshelf instead of hidden away in a back room or stacked along the wall. Three Cups of Tea, Reading Lolita in Tehran, Peace Like a River, Coraline and Ifferisms are among the more memorable.
It's been a good year really. It has had it's ups and downs, but in spite of the meandering back-trail, I think I am (mostly) heading in the right direction. I guess we shall see.
